Founder Luke Hahn spent his childhood doing things his own way. Fueled by a passion for sports, two adventurous older brothers, and a mom devoted to keeping him alive, Luke set out to create a life without boundaries. Sometimes that meant learning new snowboard tricks off the roof of a shed, and other days that meant tagging along to work with his mom so he could snowboard while she ran the mountain daycare. During the summer, the family packed up and went to the Delaware beaches where his love of surfing and the ocean grew. Long days at the beach turned into early mornings, taking eager new surfers out for lessons. When a knee injury sidelined his competitive snowboarding career, Luke took his love for the sport and decided to share it, landing a coaching position with some of the most competitive elite youth snowboarders in the country. Based in Vermont during the winters and Delaware during the summers, Luke has found a way to wake up every day and do what he loves.  

 

Be Happy started with a smile. When one of his regular surf lessons was struggling, Luke wanted to turn the day around, but wasn’t sure how to do it. Without many resources in the middle of the ocean other than a tiny chunk of wax, he drew one big smile on the nose of the board, unsure of what the reaction would be. Immediately an unlikely friendship began and the idea behind Be Happy sparked. One wax smile drawn on a surfboard turned into a canvas of smiles, each one unique, some a little crooked, occasionally even melted, but all of them happy. Endless laughs, plenty of wipeouts, some epic waves and the verdict was in. The magic of sharing a smile was growing. Be Happy was born from the humble yet irresistible lure of sharing happiness with the people around us.
